Pioneers of Solo Cruising
Norwegian Cruise Line revolutionized the cruise industry by introducing the first dedicated "Studio" cabins designed and priced specifically for solo travelers. Prior to this, single cruisers were forced to pay a "single supplement" fee (often up to 100% of the second passenger fare) to book a standard cabin. NCL's studio system offers private staterooms with zero single supplement charges.
NCL Studio Stateroom Features
Studio cabins are clustered together in a secure, keycard-access corridor on decks 10, 11, or 12 depending on the ship class. Key characteristics include:
- Optimized Footprint: Approximately 100 square feet. Though compact, they feature a full-size bed, smart hanging closets, writing desks, and an ensuite glass shower/toilet.
- One-Way Virtual Window: Many studio cabins are inside rooms with window structures looking out into the corridor. Curtains can be drawn for absolute privacy.
- Dimmable Mood Lighting: Integrated color settings (cool blue, warm orange, white) to personalize the space.
The Studio Lounge
Guests staying in Studio cabins gain exclusive keycard access to the shared Studio Lounge.
This serves as a private living room and social space to meet other solo travelers. The lounge features large-screen TVs, tables, comfortable couches, and an automated espresso/coffee station. Complimentary pastries, cookies, fresh juice, and water are stocked throughout the day. In the evenings, a bar cart is rolled in for happy hour socials.
Daily Solo Meetups & Dining
On every cruise, NCL assigns a dedicated member of the Cruise Director's staff as the Solo Host.
Every evening (typically at 5:30 PM in the Studio Lounge), the host coordinates a solo cruiser gathering. The host reviews daily activities, organizes group bar crawls, and—most importantly—reserves a large table in the main dining rooms or specialty restaurants for the solo group to dine together. This removes any anxiety of dining alone and makes making new friends incredibly easy.
